England St Ternan, Arbuthnott, Aberdeenshire Visited in June 2016 wuzmi, pacoulmag Apr 4, 2022 • 2 min read The church of St Ternan was dedicated in 1242 and is one of the most complete medieval churches in the north east of Scotland. The 15th C 'Arbuthnott Aisle', or Lady Chapel, which has an unusual small bellturret, is supported by four buttresses, each containing a niche with decorated canopy and corbel.Glass windows by D. Cottier (19th C), representing Faith, Charity, and HopeThe tomb slab or coffin cover on the left (cross, sword, and defaced shields) was used as a doorstep to the church. On the right, the 16thC tomb of James Arbuthnott (son of Sir Robert, the builder of the Arbuthnott Aisle) with probably on top the knight effigy of Hugo le Blond of Arbuthnott 13th C.Nave and 17th C fragment of grave slab.The cemetery shows some 18th C tombs displaying symbols of mortality (skull, hourglass, bones, ...) or trade symbols
