Sculpté dans une seule pièce de chêne, un immense Jessé qui faisait probablement partie d'un retable démonté au 16ième siècle - Carved from a single piece of oak, huge wooden Jesse, possibly part of a reredos dismantled in the 16th century. Abergavenny, St Mary’s Priory Church.

Le thème de l'arbre de Jessé trouve son origine dans les prophéties d’Esaïe annonçant la venue du Messie : "Or, un rameau sortira de la souche de Jessé, un rejeton poussera de ses racines […] En ce jour-là, il y aura un rejeton de Jessé, qui se dressera comme la bannière des peuples ; les nations se tourneront vers lui, et sa résidence sera entourée de gloire." (Esaïe 11:1-10)

The tree of Jesse is an illustration of Isaiah's prophecy announcing the Messiah: "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots [...] And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek; and his rest shall be glorious." (Isahia 11:1-10)
